  • Rivers Alliance marked 25 years with a morning kayak trip—launching Palmetto Pride's South Carolina Sweep, during which over 100 community cleanup events are scheduled this week to pick up trash along local waterways.  WPDE

CULTURE NEWS

  • Florence Wine & Food Festival will run March 26-28 and will feature local chefs, James Beard Award-winning Chef Sean Brock's live cooking demo, and a special tasting of Somnium wines by former NASCAR racer Danica Patrick. Funds raised will benefit Help 4 Kids.  The Post and Courier

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina faces a heightened wildfire threat today as the Forestry Commission issues a Red Flag Warning plus local authorities impose a burn ban amid prolonged drought and scarce rainfall since January 1; forecasts show little to no rain through the weekend, keeping Florence and nearby areas in persistent drought.  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dana Evans (advocate) has campaigned for road safety on Highway 378 since her daughter died in August 2024; she has gathered 1,400 signatures while state officials noted a $565 million cost for widening the road as a long-range plan. She continues to push for further changes.  WPDE
  • State Rep. Mark Smith plans to introduce a proposal later this week that would suspend the 28-cent-per-gallon gas tax for 30 days — saving drivers about $38.55 per person if prices do not drop 15 percent.  WPDE
