EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kate Buckley, a King’s Academy senior recognized as a Pee Dee Academic Achiever, plans to major in biochemistry at Presbyterian College after graduation; she has balanced academics, sports, and volunteer work to serve her community.  The Post and Courier
  • Dr. Neal Vincent, superintendent of Florence County School District 2, was named one of three statewide finalists for the 2027 Superintendent of the Year award + his nomination highlights strong leadership in the district. Officials confirmed the announcement earlier this week.  SCNow
  • At Francis Marion University's annual faculty awards night in downtown Florence, 4+ faculty members were honored at the FMU Performing Arts Center for their exceptional work in teaching and research.  SCNow
  • CarolinaTIP powered by Power:Ed has been launched in seven Pee Dee districts to help new teachers improve retention through mentorship. The S.C. effort supports educators with ongoing guidance and aims to strengthen local schools.  SCNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The South Carolina Department of Transportation will close the northbound lane of I‑95 at mile marker 175 — over the Great Pee Dee River for bridge repairs in Dillon and Florence counties; motorists should plan for delays.  SCNow

HEALTH NEWS

  • A harm reduction organization serving the Pee Dee now warns that local drugs contain dangerous substances — fentanyl, xylazine, medetomidine and nitazenes — and has distributed test strips to help users avoid harm.  WMBF News
  • MUSC will open a free-standing emergency department in West Florence in November to expand local health care options.  SCNow
