CRIME NEWS

  • A Florence County man is accused of threatening to bring multiple guns to a local hospital to kill people, sheriff’s office officials said.  WMBF News
  • A security guard, Melvin Gibson, 39, was fatally shot at Qulture lounge on East Palmetto Street early Sunday at around 4 a.m.—six others were injured in a parking lot fight, and his family now seeks justice as investigators work to arrest those involved.  WPDE

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina Shellfish Grounds and Public Shellfish Grounds will close on May 28—when the season ends half an hour after sunset—according to the SCDNR. The closure is due to higher water temperatures above 80 degrees that limit summer shellfish harvesting in coastal waters until fall.  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florence first responders at a hurricane expo at the Florence Center urged residents to prepare a hurricane kit with three days of food, water and essential supplies to tide them over during severe storms. The advice—given by leaders from Florence County Emergency Management Division, EMS and Duke Energy—also stressed planning for power outages, medication needs and reliable communication during emergencies.  The Post and Courier
  • The South Carolina Department of Transportation announced that US 501 will have an overnight lane closure for a bridge inspection—details on the exact timing were not provided.  WMBF News
  • A new EMS station opened on South Deerfield Road in the Johnsonville area to support services in Johnsonville, Pamplico and Lake City, with operations shifting from the old fire station on Broadway Street. Former Council Member Roger Poston and current county officials will hold a dedication ceremony later this month — the move aims to improve emergency response in the area.  WFXB
