Good morning, Florence.

The Florence Freedom 5K is scheduled for Friday, July 4th at 7:30 a.m. in Florence and will bring together local runners for the event.

A person was seriously injured in a crash involving a motorcycle and a car on Sunday afternoon in Florence County as West Florence Fire Rescue and Florence County EMS responded near the 500 block of West Lucas Street — part of which remains closed while police investigate the incident.

Fire crews quickly gained control of flames after an abandoned vehicle struck an embankment and caught fire at the intersection of Stokes Road & Lilas Court in Florence County while they wait for the Highway Patrol.

Hurricane season began Sunday in the Pee Dee and Fire Chief Billy Dillon urged families to prepare by assembling emergency kits—he stressed that unsafe generator use and downed trees can cause fires or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Dillon reminded locals that taking precautions now may help prevent life-threatening hazards later.

Florence County, the Florence Fire Department and Lake City have received grants from the Duke Energy HERO Grant Program to boost their emergency response for hurricane season—Florence Fire Department got $14,000 for a vehicle repeater system, the county received $20,000 for a utility task vehicle and road barricades, and Lake City received $6,000 for radios.
