CRIME NEWS

  • On Wednesday night, Florence police responded to a shooting at the intersection of Clyde Street and Gaillard Street when a passing vehicle fired at a car, leaving one person critically injured—investigators found multiple rifle and pistol casings at the scene.  WMBF News
  • A 19-year-old from Florence was charged with carjacking on Sunday morning—Florence Police said the suspect took a vehicle by force, sparking an immediate investigation.  SCNow
  • A person riding in a car was shot Wednesday night in Florence and is very badly hurt—police said an armed man tried to carjack the ride giver—while a 19-year-old suspect is in jail.  WMBF News
  • A 19-year-old man was arrested in Florence for an attempted armed carjacking that happened around 11:45 a.m. on Sunday when he accepted a ride from a victim at Waverly Avenue—he pulled out a gun at a gas station, forcing a struggle before police charged him on Wednesday near Coit Street and Evans Street.  WMBF News
  • On Wednesday, 43-year-old Joshua Poston surrendered after a standoff on Pine Needles Road following a domestic report of gunfire—he now faces charges including discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, two counts of high and aggravated domestic violence, and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction—and he remains held at the Florence County Detention Center.  WMBF News
  • On Wednesday, September 3rd, Florence police said a person was hospitalized in critical condition after a drive-by shooting on Gaillard Street around 11 p.m.—rifle and pistol casings were found at the scene as investigators continue to search for leads.  WPDE
  • Four survivors of a mass shooting at a Little River boat party sued event organizers—Hurricane Fleet, the Little River campground, and related managers—for allegedly inadequate security that allowed a 16-year-old gunman to fire after the boat docked at Watson Avenue marina on May 25, which left ten people with gunshot wounds.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said that paid parental leave should include stillbirths based on state law that counts unborn children as persons—his office noted that the law does not limit benefits to live births. State Rep. Neal Collins plans to file legislation to clarify the law so that grieving parents receive the same support.  WMBF News
