- ➤ DeWitt’s Bluff Landing closed in April for seawall construction to stop erosion along the Great Pee Dee River and will reopen in September—county officials say the project protects this popular boating and fishing spot. Additional improvements to the dock may be planned later if funding allows. The Post and Courier
- ➤ Florence Downtown Development Corp partnered with the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association and local restaurants to bring back RestaurantWeek from Sept. 6 to Sept. 14, with ten restaurants offering special menu items and a Downtown Dish Giveaway based on points. The event also includes a craft brew crawl on Friday— encouraging diners to visit downtown eateries to earn rewards. WPDE
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police are assisting federal officers today in searching for a man who allegedly broke into cars near the Florence Federal Building and was chased to the Cambridge Court apartments on West Darlington Street—neighbors reported officers gathering at the complex with weapons in hand. WPDE
- ➤ Florence County authorities ask the public to help locate 23-year-old Jasmine Beard who was last seen around 9 a.m. Sunday at the House of Hope on Church Street wearing a black hat, black mask, and carrying a teal purse—she has autism and ADHD and anyone with information should contact the Sheriff’s Office. WFXB
- ➤ Tyrese Gilbert was charged with murder and two weapon offenses on Sept 8 for a 2024 homicide on Carver Street in Florence—authorities linked him to the fatal shooting of Melvin Johnson on Feb 19, 2024. WPDE
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Florence City Council approved master plans Monday for water distribution, sewer collection and stormwater management that will guide capital improvements over a 20-year period. The plans include policies, budgeting measures and an increased funding resolution for the stormwater mitigation project through the South Carolina Office of Resiliency—supporting future growth and infrastructure needs in Florence.
