COMMUNITY NEWS

  • About one hundred Coastal Carolina University students lined up at the Horry County Animal Care Center in Conway—seeking the chance to adopt a dog and help clear the shelter.  WMBF News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Sept. 22, 1989, Hurricane Hugo hit South Carolina as a Category 4 storm—damaging homes, roads and forests while knocking out power and causing 13 deaths with nearly $7 billion in damage. The storm affected coastal and inland communities including Florence.  WPDE
  • At Youth Days Weekend, local children aged 9 to 17 learned about protecting the Lower Pee Dee Basin watersheds and the Waccamaw River through camping, horseback riding and a two mile kayak ride — an event hosted by the Waccamaw Indian people and sponsored by the Winyah Rivers Alliance. The program taught them to care for nature — lessons that will help preserve the local environment for the future.  WPDE
