ECONOMY NEWS

  • Duke Energy proposed rate increases at a public hearing in Florence on September 25—residential and small-business rates would rise by 15.1% to fund grid improvements and meet growing demand. Additional hearings are scheduled in Sumter, Bishopville, and Columbia to gather more public input.  SCNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina’s law against price gouging took effect after Gov. McMaster declared a state of emergency due to tropical system Imelda that could bring heavy rain and flooding—attorney general Alan Wilson said businesses charging excessive prices on food, gas, lodging and supplies may face fines or jail.  WMBF News
  • Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency Friday afternoon as tropical storm Imelda is expected to bring heavy rain, wind, and flooding next week—allowing state and local agencies to access federal support. The South Carolina Emergency Management Division will coordinate with local, state, and federal officials to deploy necessary resources.  WMBF News
  • On September 26th, South Carolina's governor declared a State of Emergency—an action taken to address emerging concerns in the state.  WMBF News
  • Today, the Public Service Commission met in Florence to collect Duke Energy customers’ feedback on a proposed rate change—intended to fund power plant upgrades and improve system reliability—and will accept comments until Oct. 27. If approved, the rate increase will take effect in early 2026 with residential bills possibly rising about $21 per 1,000 kilowatt hours and commercial rates nearly 13% higher.  WPDE
  • South Carolina Legal Services unveiled its new Justice Van in Florence to offer legal help for rural residents without reliable transportation—serving both Florence and Darlington counties.  SCNow
  • Florence Fire Chief Shannon Tanner was sworn in as president of the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs earlier this week at a leadership conference. He has served with the Florence Fire Department for nearly 30 years and worked in fire service for over 35 years.  WPDE
