  • On September 19, more than 300 volunteers from 31 companies in Florence County completed 85 service projects for United Way's 34th Annual Day of Caring—marking a record of local support. The event showcased community effort and the power of volunteerism.  SCNow
  • The Fall Plant and Flower Festival will take place at Pee Dee State Farmers Market in Florence from Oct. 10-12 and will feature fall plants, foods, crafts, and local produce—an event that offers seasonal delights to the community. CULTURE NEWS

  • Jack’s Books and Lula’s Coffee Co. will host a Stars Hollow Experience event on Oct. 11 in downtown Florence to celebrate fall with books, coffee and special giveaways (including a free Apple Jack Pastry for the first dozen customers and a gift basket valued over $200).  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • AT&T landline service is down in Florence after outages affected the state, and county emergency management officials said the company is working to fix the issue—residents needing urgent help should call 911 from a cell phone.  WPDE
  • Florence County is applying for a $550,000 grant to demolish the old Timmonsville Career Center that has leaks, mold, and asbestos hazards. County officials plan to use the cleared space to expand a renovated ballpark with a picnic area, playground, and green space — community members support the action amid safety concerns.  WPDE
  • West Florence Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief John Mays earned the SC Chief Fire Officer designation from the SC State Association of Fire Chiefs.  SCNow
