  • Florence County Humane Society received a $100,000 grant to reopen its long-closed spay and neuter clinic — renovations are nearly complete but further funding is needed for equipment before an official opening can be set, a step that should help ease shelter overcrowding. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The ongoing government shutdown, now nearing one week, has forced local groups like Harvest Hope Food Bank to face major cuts to food supplies and prompted state programs such as WIC and SNAP to plan for potential adjustments if funding falls further. Officials said SNAP benefits will be paid for October and warned that if Congress does not extend tax credits by December 31 up to 30% of those insured may lose coverage—leading to widespread concern.  WPDE
