COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Florence County announced a new food assistance search tool on 211.org to help residents find nearby food pantries, meal programs, and other essential support amid delayed SNAP benefits. United Way Worldwide and the local 211 network plan to expand the system—connecting those in need with community resources as families face heightened food insecurity.  WPDE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Francis Marion University in Florence has appointed Jennifer Titanski-Hooper as its new vice president of research and community services—she will lead the school's research initiatives and coordinate community outreach programs.  The Post and Courier
  • Francis Marion University in Florence announced the Darla Moore Annual Forestry Scholarship—funded by the Darla Moore Foundation—to support full-time South Carolina students entering its new forestry program in fall. The scholarship, renewable with a minimum 2.75 GPA and 30 credit hours per year, will help train students in forest management and conservation.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Airports in South Carolina are not on the FAA list set to cut up to 10% of flights, but travelers at Columbia, Greenville-Spartanburg and Charleston airports could see delays if connecting flights from hubs like ATL or CLT are affected—officials advise checking with airlines for the latest updates. Nationwide, these cuts could impact up to 1,800 flights by reducing available seats and stressing air traffic control during the government shutdown.  WPDE

HEALTH NEWS

  • Students from Francis Marion University and the University of South Carolina discussed diabetes awareness and prevention tips during November Diabetes Awareness Month—sharing screening advice, healthy eating ideas and ways to treat the disease early—and noted that local programs provide community support.  The Post and Courier
